Gas and electric causes, safe checks and when to stop

Why Is My Dryer Not Heating Up and What Do I Check First

A dryer not heating up is most often a clogged vent or a tripped breaker.

A blown thermal fuse or a worn heating element is next. Gas models add a closed valve or weak igniter. Run the safe checks below first. Call (260) 297-8251 and a person answers. Free estimates.

Quick Answer: Where the Heat Usually Goes Missing

If the dryer runs but no heat comes out, one of five things failed. Check power to the element, airflow through the vent, the thermal fuse and the heating element or thermostat. On gas models, check the valve and igniter. Airflow comes first because a blocked vent is often the reason the fuse blew.

Two-Minute Checks You Can Do Safely Before Anyone Opens a Panel

Whirlpool's own steps for electric and gas dryers start the same way. Do them in order.

  1. Run a heated timed cycle with the drum empty for five minutes. Then open the door and feel inside. Air Only and Air Fluff cycles never add heat.
  2. Reset both breakers on an electric dryer. Its 30-amp circuit has two, one for the motor and one for the element. A single tripped half leaves the drum turning with no heat.
  3. Check the gas shutoff valve on a gas dryer. It is open when the handle sits parallel to the gas pipe.
  4. Clean the lint screen, then watch the outdoor vent flap while the dryer runs. It should swing open.
  5. Unplug an electric dryer and look at the vent hose behind it for crushing or kinks. Leave gas connections alone.

Stop there. Every test past this point means meter readings on a 240-volt appliance.

Most Likely Causes of a Dryer That Spins Without Heat, in Order

Clogged vent and lint screen

Restricted airflow overheats the dryer, so safety parts shut the heat off. NFPA calls failure to clean the leading cause of dryer fires. It says to clean the vent pipe at least once a year. Clean sooner if drying takes longer than usual.

Blown thermal fuse

It cuts power to the heat when the dryer overheats. Paradise Appliance Service notes a tripped fuse cannot be reset. So it gets replaced and the overheating cause gets fixed too.

Worn heating element or thermostat

The element is a wire coil that can break with no visible damage. Easy Bear says the high-limit thermostat trips near 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Elements typically last 8 to 12 years.

Electric dryer not heating: half the breaker tripped

The same guide explains that a double-pole breaker can trip on one side. This keeps the drum turning while the 240-volt heat circuit stays dead.

Gas models: valve, igniter and flame sensor

Easy Bear calls the igniter the most common gas failure point, usually lasting 3 to 5 years. Gas valve coils and the flame sensor are the other suspects.

Gas Smell or Burning Smell: Stop the Dryer and Leave It Off

If you smell gas, don't smoke or light a match. Leave the building. Then call 911 and NIPSCO's emergency line, 1-800-634-3524, from outside, as the NIPSCO customer handbook instructs. NIPSCO supplies natural gas in Fort Wayne, per Greater Fort Wayne Inc..

For a burning smell, switch the breaker off and keep it off. The U.S. Fire Administration estimated about 2,900 reported residential dryer fires a year in 2008 to 2010. Failure to clean was the leading factor at 34 percent.

What a Technician Tests and Why the Order Matters

A technician starts with airflow, because replacing a fuse on a blocked vent only repeats the failure. Next comes voltage at the terminal block. Then comes continuity on the fuse, high-limit thermostat, cycling thermostat and element, a method Paradise Appliance Service describes. Gas dryers add igniter, valve coil and flame sensor tests.

No one can name the failed part from the symptom alone. Several parts fail the same way, so a meter beats a guess.

Repair or Replace: How to Weigh It Without a Price List

A dryer not heating because of a fuse, thermostat, element or igniter is the usual small-part repair. Control boards and gas valves cost more. Easy Bear treats a dryer past 10 years with a large repair bill as a replacement candidate. Ask for the diagnosis before the repair. If the vent caused the failure, fix it first. See our gas and electric dryer repair page. A drum that will not turn at all is a different fault. It is covered in the guide to a dead drum.

Keep the Heat On Through a Fort Wayne Winter

The National Weather Service lists a January average low of 15.3 degrees at Fort Wayne. It also lists 33.6 inches of snow a year, per its climate page. NFPA says to keep the outdoor vent flap clear of snow. Clean the lint screen every load, never run the dryer while you are out. Keep boxes and clothing away from it.

May 2023 Monroe Street Fire: Lint From a Fort Wayne Dryer Ignites

On Monday, May 15, 2023, just after 6 p.m., the Fort Wayne Fire Department responded. The call came from the 3000 block of Monroe Street in southeast Fort Wayne. WANE reported the cause: lint from the dryer had caught fire.

The report gives no detail on the vent or why heat built up. Our lesson is our own reasoning, not the source's. A dryer that can't shed its heat through a clear vent is the setup NFPA describes. The thermal fuse exists to stop that. So a dryer with no heat deserves a vent check before a restart.

Fort Wayne Dryer Heat Questions, From Fuses to Gas Valves

Why is my dryer not heating but the drum still turns?

The motor and the heat run on separate parts. So a dead element, blown thermal fuse or half-tripped breaker leaves the drum spinning with cold air. Check the vent and both breakers first. If those are fine, call Dryer Repair Fort Wayne in Fort Wayne for a free estimate.

Can a clogged vent make a dryer stop heating?

Yes. A blocked vent traps heat, and the safety parts then cut the heat off. The thermal fuse is usually what blows. Clean the lint screen, check the outdoor flap and have the full duct cleared before replacing parts. Otherwise the new fuse will blow again.

Can I reset a blown thermal fuse?

No. A tripped thermal fuse can't be reset and has to be replaced, according to Paradise Appliance Service. The cause matters more than the part. Fix the blocked vent or failed thermostat that made it overheat, then replace the fuse.

Why is my dryer not getting hot enough to dry towels?

Weak heat usually means restricted airflow, a partly failed element or a thermostat cycling too early. Clean the lint screen and vent first. If clothes still stay damp, call Dryer Repair Fort Wayne in Fort Wayne. Describe how long a cycle now takes.

How do I tell if the breaker is the problem?

Look for two breakers on the electric dryer's circuit and flip each fully off, then on. Whirlpool says one powers the motor and one the element. So one tripped half means a turning drum and no heat. If either trips again, stop and call.

Is it safe to keep running a dryer that does not heat?

Not for long. A no-heat dryer can mean a blocked vent. Running it with a clogged vent raises fire risk. NFPA also says never leave a dryer running when you leave home. Turn it off, clear the lint and have it checked.

Should I repair or replace an older dryer with no heat?

Repair when it is a small part like a fuse, thermostat or igniter. Easy Bear suggests replacing when the dryer is past about 10 years and the fix is a large one. Call Dryer Repair Fort Wayne for a free estimate and a plain answer.
