Belt, pulley, rollers and motor, with a hand-spin test

Dryer Not Spinning and What to Check Before You Open It

A dryer not spinning almost always means a broken drive belt.

But a heavy load or an open door can stop the drum too. Check the load and the door, then try the hand-spin test below. Call (260) 297-8251 and a person answers. Free estimates.

8 to 12years, typical belt life
2/3drum full, load ceiling
1/2drum full for sensor loads
2,900reported dryer fires yearly

Quick Answer: Load and Door First, Then the Belt

If the dryer starts but doesn't spin the drum, the cause is usually one of four things. It may be a load that is too heavy or too light, or a door that opened mid-cycle. Or it may be a broken belt or a worn pulley or roller. Motor failure is the rarer, costlier answer, so it comes last.

Safe Checks Before You Touch a Panel

LG's support page and Easy Bear give the same starting order.

  1. Close the door fully and press Start again. Opening the door mid-cycle stops the drum by design.
  2. Pull out part of an oversized load. Or add towels to a very small one until the drum is about half full. LG says an overfull drum may not rotate.
  3. Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker, and shut the gas valve on a gas model.
  4. Open the door and turn the drum by hand.
  5. Note what you feel: free and easy, rough and scraping, or stiff.

Free turning points to the belt.

What the Hand-Spin Result Tells You

Dryer belt broken: the drum spins freely by hand

A drum that turns easily while the motor hums or runs points to the belt. That is the view of Easy Bear and Paradise Appliance Service. The belt can snap or just slip off the pulley.

Idler pulley wear: a squeal that climbs as it warms up

The idler pulley keeps the belt tight. Easy Bear describes a squeal that rises in pitch as the dryer warms. The belt can't grip.

Worn drum rollers or glides: rough, scraping, catching

Rollers and glides carry the drum. Paradise says to replace the full set if one is damaged.

Motor trouble: a hum with no rotation

Easy Bear lists a hum with no turning as a motor sign. So is a dryer that stops after 10 to 30 minutes and restarts after cooling. Paradise advises confirming the blower wheel and drum turn freely before blaming the motor.

Stop and Leave It Off: Burning Smell or Hot Motor

A burning smell can mean an overheating motor winding. Easy Bear says not to wait on it. Switch off the breaker and call. The U.S. Fire Administration estimated about 2,900 reported residential dryer fires a year in 2008 to 2010. NFPA says never run the dryer while you are away or asleep.

What a Technician Checks and in What Order

A technician spins the drum with the belt off to confirm the rollers and bearings are free. Then they check the blower wheel, the idler pulley and belt condition. The motor goes last. Paradise notes new motors are expensive and a trained technician should confirm one.

Repair or Replace: A Belt Is Different From a Motor

A dryer drum not turning because of a belt, pulley or roller set is a common small-part repair. A seized motor on an old dryer is the one to weigh against a new machine. See our dryer repair service. If the drum turns but stays cold, the no-heat guide is the better read.

Loads That Spare the Belt

Fix.com says overloading strains the belt, pulley, bearings and motor. It suggests loads at two-thirds capacity or less. If the dryer won't spin after a heavy load, unload it before restarting. Soaking wet laundry adds weight too.

February 2012 South Park Drive Fire: A Squeal From a Fort Wayne Laundry Area

On February 12, 2012, the Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to 3710 South Park Drive. Per the department's news release, the resident heard a squeal from the laundry area and found fire in the dryer. Crews found heavy smoke and fire near the dryer and put it out quickly. One person and the dogs got out and no one was hurt.

The release gives no cause. A squeal is also what Easy Bear describes for a worn idler pulley. We can't say that happened here. The lesson is ours. A new squeal or burning smell means switch off the dryer and have it checked.

Fort Wayne Dryer Drum Questions, From Belts to Motors

Why is my dryer not tumbling when the motor runs?

A running motor with a still drum usually means a broken or slipped drive belt. Turn the drum by hand with the power off. If it spins freely, the belt is the likely cause. Call Dryer Repair Fort Wayne in Fort Wayne for a free estimate and a person answers.

Can an overloaded dryer stop spinning?

Yes. LG says an overfull drum may not rotate. Fix.com says overloading strains the belt, pulley and motor. Remove part of the load, close the door and press Start again. If the drum still won't turn when empty, stop and call.

Can I run the dryer with a broken belt?

No. Without the belt the drum can't turn. Running the motor anyway only builds heat and wear. Turn the dryer off and unplug it. Have the belt replaced before you try to dry another load. So the motor is not strained for nothing.

Why does my dryer hum but the drum will not turn?

A hum with no turning most often means a broken belt, per Paradise Appliance Service. It can also mean a seized motor. Turn the drum by hand. Free means belt. Stiff means a deeper fault that needs a technician's check.

How long does a dryer belt last?

Easy Bear puts typical dryer belt life at 8 to 12 years, shorter with heavy weekly use. Age, overloading and worn pulleys all shorten it. If yours is past 8 years and the drum stalls, call Dryer Repair Fort Wayne in Fort Wayne. The estimate is free.

Is a squealing dryer dangerous?

A squeal can come from a worn idler pulley or roller. It can also precede heat build-up. Treat a new squeal with a burning smell as urgent: switch off the breaker and call. A squeal alone still deserves a check soon.

Is it worth fixing an old dryer that will not spin?

Usually yes for a belt, pulley or roller set, since those are small-part repairs. Weigh replacement when the dryer is old and the motor is the fault. Ask Dryer Repair Fort Wayne for a free estimate, and a person will explain the choice plainly.
